Madame Grès (Germaine Émilie Krebs) was one of the greatest couturiers of the 20th century. She was regarded by many as a sculptor in fabric. She trained at Prémet (a couture house in Paris) and went to work for the couturier Julie Barton. She married in 1937 and became Madame Grès. Five years later, she opened her own couture house on la rue de la Paix. She was forced to close for not complying with German fabric restrictions but reopened in 1944.

Fashion students at Paris American Academy have the opportunity to learn how to make their own Madame Grès dress with Madame Martine Lenoir, who has over 24 years of experience at Madame Grès Haute Couture and 10 years at Prêt-à-Porter de luxe at Madame Grès and Madame Colette Picco, who worked as a Draper for Madame Grès for 22 years.
